 - Returned HRESULT = 0x8004230f
 - Error text: VSS_E_UNEXPECTED_PROVIDER_ERROR

First you may want to check the Windows Event Viewer logs around the time when the backup application reported the above error.

Usually the Windows logs in Application and System will contain VSS errors, Disk Warnings, VolSnap errors or other entries that will point you to the right direction.

Sometimes this error is also caused by backup applications using their own drivers which may interfere with the VSS infrastructure. Check this article for removal directions.
